So picking 5 Winter House Plants, which will last all season in my house is a big ask.
Deciding to tackle this point head on I did a little research and I am pleased to report that the plants I've chosen are still going strong. So when they now see me they can at least slow to a jog! Result!
These are my top 5.
1. The Poinsettia
Beautiful, vivid, fiery red, this statement of a plant is a Winter must-have. Often used as a Christmas decoration, it lasts well into the New Year and is so easy to maintain. It's a great choice to brighten up the room.
Care Tips: Water well, then leave the top of soil to dry out between waterings.
2. Indoor Azalea
This is such a pretty plant and it has received many compliments over the weeks. The buds look so much like rosebuds and they eventually flower into colourful blooms and cheer up even the greyest of days.
Care Tips: Likes bright light, no direct sun. Keep soil moist but don't leave it standing in water. Don't place near drafts.
3. Cyclamen
The interesting, patterned foliage with elegant cluster of smooth petals look fantastic on the windowsill. They are available in different colours to match with any room decor. I've chosen pink and red shades ...
Care Tips: Bright light, no direct sun. Water from below by placing pot in a saucer of water for no more than 30 mins. Keep soil moist.
4. Boston Fern
Lovely to look at, these vibrant, green, dainty fronds have a strong presence in the room. You can almost see the oxygen emitting from its leaves and feel its healthy and healing benefits!
Care Tips: Moderate light, no direct sun. Keep soil moist.
5. Leafy Begonia
It took me a while to get used to the bold, strikingly, marked leaves but they have become a firm favourite within my household and the stunning foliage takes pride of place in my list.
Care Tips: Protect from direct sun and don't allow soil to dry out but at the same time don't over water.
It sounds obvious now, but try to remember not to leave the plants on windowsills during frosty nights! My plants were looking incredibly sorry for themselves when I forgot to move them!
If you have any extra plant tips, they would not go amiss!
What are your favourites?
