Living with the Romans at Housesteads Fort, Hadrian Wall

My family and I've just spent a wonderful day exploring Housestead's Fort at Hadrian's Wall. What an absolutely amazing place!

We explored the ruins of the barracks, hospital, HQ, the communal baths, the Commanding Officer's house with it's underfloor heating.... and believe me, that heating must have been well used as it can get pretty chilly up there!

It was easy to imagine yourself back to the time of the Roman Empire. The picture below shows where the granary used to be with its raised floor to keep away the damp and rodents.

Learning more about the Romans' organisation and sophistication was fascinating, but as you can see from the photos, the position of this fort is jawdropping. It is in such stunning and wild countryside that this is actually an attraction in itself.

We walked a little part of the wall trying to take in the fact that we were strolling along something that was built in 128AD - that is 1887 years ago!

We could easily have spent more time in the area but unfortunately we ran out of time. It really is truly spectacular and would highly recommend you go and visit!
